THE JOYS OF FATHERHOOD: HOW TO THRIVE AS A DIVORCED DAD

Atlanta Family & Immigration Law • Jun 22, 2018

When your divorce was in progress, your main concerns were how the marital estate would be divided, whether or not you would have to pay spousal support, and, above all, how much time you would get with the kids. Now that the Final Judgment and Divorce Decree have been entered, you have the answers to those questions. The uncertainty is over, and it’s time to start thriving as a divorced dad. But how do you go about it?

How to Thrive as a Divorced Dad

1.  Adopt a Positive Outlook as a Divorced Dad

When you hold onto anger and resentment, you deny yourself the opportunity to revel in your new life. Spend less time on remembering past arguments or injustices and more on creating fantastic new memories with your kids.

2.  Find What You Love- and Share It with the Kids!

Many newly single dads try to find who they love right after the divorce. They eagerly attend Meetup.com groups and join dating sites to ease the loneliness. While it’s fine to be open to new relationships, use this time to learn what you love to do alone. Did you enjoy playing guitar before you got married? Why not take a few classes and share your playing with the kids? They might discover musical interests of their own, adding more richness to your time together.

3.  Cultivate a Positive Co-parenting Relationship

Many divorced couples discover that they are happier as co-parents than they were as a couple. If you take affirmative steps to make your relationship with your former spouse a positive one, your kids will be happier for it. If the bitter feelings remain, commit to being civil and confining conversations to parenting matters.

4.  Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

If you’re finding that the hurt from your divorce is refusing to subside and preventing you from moving forward, talk to close friends and family or seek professional help if you want to accelerate your healing. This type of support will make it easier to recenter your life, accept your new circumstances, and embrace future opportunities, both alone and with your kids.

5.  Respect All Court Orders

To thrive also means to stay out of legal trouble. Be sure to respect all court orders pertaining to child support, spousal support, and parenting time. Never return the children late unless there is a valid reason for doing so, such as blocked traffic. Similarly, make all your support payments on time. If circumstances change and you need to seek a custody or support modification, use the correct legal procedures; never take it upon yourself to change a court-ordered arrangement.

You are an amazing dad with equally outstanding children. There are a lot of reasons to celebrate right now. If you run into any difficulties as you rebuild, be sure to contact an experienced Georgia father’s rights attorney immediately.
