Your Happiest Chapter Yet: Our Tips for Thriving Post-Divorce

Let’s face it: Divorce is gut-wrenching. On your wedding day, you imagined that you were at the start of your happily ever after. 1. Lean on your friends and family.

Your friends and family understand that you’ve been through something very difficult, and they want to help you. Do not be too prideful to lean on them and accept the support they offer. If they were going through the same thing, wouldn’t you rather they turn to you for support instead of trying to push through it on their own? So say yes to the kindly offered coffee date or movie night. And don’t just say, “Yeah, sure, some time.” Actually pick a day and put it on the calendar! You need your loved ones more than ever now, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. They are eager to give you a shoulder to cry on when you’re feeling heartbroken about the past, but they can also help you look towards the future and build a life post-divorce that will fulfill and amaze you.

2. Consider making therapy a part of your new routine.

There are likely some emotional issues you’re facing that are beyond the scope of what friends and family can help you with. Developing a relationship with a therapist can be extremely helpful at all points in life, but especially in transitional times like this. They can guide you with things like stress management, goal-setting, and being kind to yourself. Divorce can do a number on your self-esteem and therapy is the best way to get yourself back to your highest level of functioning! If you already have a therapist that you like, make sure to schedule appointments regularly. If therapy hasn’t been a part of your life in the past, a primary care physician can typically refer you to a therapist. Be aware that it may take trying appointments with a few therapists before you find the right fit. Don’t let that discourage you — there’s a therapist out there for everyone, and when you find him or her, it will change your life for the better!

3. Do something you’ve always wanted to do.

Sometimes marriage gets in our way of achieving certain dreams. Maybe you always wanted to take a trip to New York City but your spouse always insisted on using your vacation days for trips to see family in Texas. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to make homemade pasta but your spouse followed a strict gluten-free diet. Post-divorce is the time to see the glittering lights of the Big Apple, or sign up for that pasta-making class you’ve had bookmarked in your browser for longer than you can remember! Traveling and starting a new hobby are both great ways to remind yourself how much the world still has to offer, how much there still is to learn, and how many adventures await you. These are important things to remember post-divorce.
